The Black Lion Mercenary Company

The Black Lions originated in the Levant from a group of ex-Varangians and half-caste warriors; tough fighters who cared little for their cause other than pay. After the Fourth Crusade, under the leadership of Odda, their company has grown from 30 to close to 200 warriors. Many of the new recruits are Frankish ex-Crusaders who didn’t return home from the Crusade, as well as a small number of 7th generation Anglo-Saxon-Greeks who are either ex-Varangians, or ex-members of the Latinikon regiments. The Black Lions have to a man been blooded in the wars with the Bulgars (on both sides of the conflict) in the decade since and are considered a veteran mercenary company. The ex-Varangians are those who, for a variety of reasons, have been more loyal to coin than their status as the emperor’s elite guard; not unusual at the time considering the ridiculous turn-over of emperors in 1203-1204. The Latinkons, which include two knights and their entourages, lost their pronoia land grants under the new Latin regime in Constantinople; they are bitter about the world and loyal to Odda whom they see as a leader with common sense who fights smart and who has a clear warrior’s sense of honour. The company also includes a number of regular sergeants who simply lost their payday.
All of the Black Lions are competent in either the bow or spear and practiced with the other. All Black Lions know some Tactics and all are practiced or competent at Brawling.
